How to Send Your G+ Posts to Twitter Automatically

Jul 31, 2012 by

I’m going to dip into tech land here a bit to talk about something I’ve found not only very useful, but also pretty awesome, actually. I’m a big fan of Google+. I think it’s a fantastic conversation medium and it’s lending itself to be a great place to actually play games. When I started using G+ regularly, though, Twitter went by the wayside. Not on purpose, of course. I just couldn’t handle having conversations in both places at the same time.

Then, recently, a couple of people on G+ pointed out to me some ways to automatically post a tweet any time you post a public post on G+. One of the methods involved using ifttt.com, which I’ve been dying to try out for a while, so off I went to set it all up. In the end, the whole thing took me only about 20 minutes to do, and that was after needing to find an alternative method for getting the RSS feed. Since doing this, I’ve gotten back into Twitter. I’ve even brought a few of the folks that I enjoy chatting with on Twitter over into Google+ land. All in all, a pretty solid 20 minutes worth of work.

Today, I went through and added a second ifttt so that I can post entries from my Changeling game’s Google+ page to my Twitter feed, and I figured I’d take the time to write up how to do it for anyone else who wants to benefit from this awesomeness.

Step 1: Get Your Google+ Profile ID

If you already know what this is, skip to step 2. Otherwise…

Your Profile ID is that really long number that you see in the URL that’s in your address bar when you’re on many of the pages in Google+. Just take a look at your profile by clicking on your avatar, and you’ll see something similar to this:

Except, of course, where that really long number is, you’ll see another really long number. This is your Google+ User ID. Copy that sucker right out of your address bar.

Step 2: ENGAGE

This was already super easy, but I made it even easier because that’s how I roll, baby. Click on this link right here to head over to ifttt.com and check out the recipe I made to share.

In the ‘Feed URL’ portion of that form, paste your Google+ User ID over the one  already there (unless, of course, you want to tweet everything from the Steam & Crumpets page to your followers – I won’t object!):

At the bottom of the page, click ‘Use Recipe’. If you haven’t used ifttt.com before, you’ll need to go through some account setup and authorize Twitter, but that’s super easy and the process is very smoothly guided. Once you’re done…

Step 3: PROFIT

That’s really all there is to it, I just sort of always like to have a step three. It ties things up, makes it all a little more final and complete. Doesn’t it? Now, with your mastery over Google+ AND Twitter, you will surely grow to dominate the social network and become richer than your WILDEST DREAMS!

Or, maybe, you’ll just have more awesome conversations with awesome people. :)
